In this season of renewal, sobriety coach Heather Lowe recalls her first wobbly steps into sobriety, and the courage and determination it took to take root in a new, sunnier life—full of possibility—much like her favorite spring flower, the daffodil.

I have always loved the bright fresh feeling of spring, when everything in the world is reawakening. Joy, optimism, and beauty abound, and all things seem possible. My birthday is March 21st, the first day of spring; I was born to thrive in this season.

Since giving up alcohol seven years ago, the daffodil—my favorite spring flower—has become the official symbol of my sobriety journey. When I see a daffodil, it’s a happy reminder of my transition from darkness to light—from shame and guilt to joy and triumph—a reawakening after the long stillness of winter.
