Ask A Coach: Family Gathering

Three months alcohol-free with a family gathering ahead, a reader asks how to manage family dynamics, tons of alcohol, and the emotions already rising. Coach Heather Lowe answers.

Dear Coach Heather,

After many years of trying and a million starts and stops, I have finally made some progress on my sobriety. I am coming up on three months alcohol-free. The problem is next month I have a family gathering, and I am already feeling twitchy about it. Obviously, no one triggers me more than my family. Just thinking about it is bringing up all my past resentments, irritations, and annoyances. Plus, of course, my entire family drinks, and I haven’t figured out a way to tell them I quit. For good. Ninety days is a long time for me to be alcohol-free, and I can feel a shift happening that I will hopefully sustain, but it’s also not enough time, like a year or more, where I feel totally confident. How can I manage family dynamics, tons of alcohol, and all the uncomfortable emotions I am already experiencing about this event? I do not want to miss the event, but it’s already spiked my anxiety so high I feel like throwing in the towel and starting again after.

Can you help? Signed, Feeling Twitchy

Dear Twitchy, Let’s start with this: Three months is not a small milestone. It’s a big deal. It’s 90 days of showing up for yourself in a new way, even when it’s hard and even when no one’s watching. This alone deserves recognition, celebration, and compassion.

It also makes total sense that this family event has your nervous system on high alert. Family can be our greatest source of love and connection and also the source of our greatest triggers. Our families have a direct line to our inner child, our unresolved resentments, and all the places we’re still healing. Add alcohol into the mix, something you’re in the tender process of separating from, and it’s no wonder your anxiety is flaring.

Let’s break this down into manageable pieces, starting with the truth:

You do not have to prove anything to anyone. You are allowed to protect your peace. You don’t need group buy-in or validation about a decision you made for yourself and already have 90 days of success doing. You don’t need anyone else’s agreement or approval. Going into the event with this in mind will help. Here are some additional steps you can take to keep yourself on track when things feel difficult:

Prepare, Don’t Panic

Begin preparing now. Write out your worries. Acknowledge each fear or resentment that’s rising. You’re not overreacting—you’re trying to stay safe. When we name our triggers ahead of time, we give our nervous system time to plan for them and ground itself. Instead of stuffing down your inner thoughts and fears, bring them into the light and say them out loud. Writing everything out is a great step in planning how you will respond.

In addition to mental preparation, pack yourself a sobriety toolkit: Bring your own AF drinks to enjoy when others are drinking. Download a five-minute meditation to listen to in the car before you walk in. Have an exit strategy so you can leave with grace when you’re ready to go. Line up sober supporters to text or call during the event. Rehearse a few one-liners like, “I’m not drinking right now, it’s been good for me.” You don’t need a dissertation. You need boundaries.

It’s Okay to Keep It Private

You don’t owe anyone an announcement. “I’m not drinking tonight” is a complete sentence. Whether or not you tell your family you’ve quit “for good” is entirely your choice. You’re not being secretive—you’re being protective of something new and precious.

Think of your sobriety like a tiny sprout. Would you expose it to stormy weather before it’s had time to root? Probably not. This gathering might not be the place for deep conversations, and that’s okay. Protect yourself like a baby bird in the nest.

Anchor in Your “Why”

When the drinks start flowing, and the old patterns start swirling, drop back into why you chose this path. Picture your day-91 self, waking up proud, strong, and clear-headed. Visualize how you want to feel after the event. You can’t control your family, but you can control how you care for yourself before, during, and after.

Plan the Aftercare

Schedule downtime for the next day. Block off time for a walk, a bath, a journal session, a call with a sober friend. You may feel emotionally hungover even if you don’t drink. That’s normal. Your nervous system has been through something. Stay tender with yourself. Tears are okay. You are reprogramming yourself and after generations of doing things differently. It’s no small feat—it’s the work of a lifetime and you are in the thick of it!

You Are Not Starting Over

I know you said you’re so anxious you’re considering throwing in the towel. Firstly, if that feeling arises, remember it is only momentary. Walk outside for some fresh air, and if you need to, leave the event to give yourself some space. That said, if the worst-case scenario happens and you do drink, it does not erase your progress. There is no lost work. This isn’t a test you pass or fail. It’s a path you return to, again and again, as you learn how to walk it more gracefully.

But I believe you can go to this gathering and stay sober. Not because you have to white-knuckle your way through it, but because you are learning to stay with yourself even when it’s hard.

You’re stronger than you feel right now.

With you all the way,

Coach Heather
