Nicole Pietrandrea Hough for AFTER: I imagine with a background like yours, you’ve had an interesting journey to where you are now. Can you tell us your story? How did you get into the beverage world and how did you end up focusing on mindful drinking and the no-and-low category?
Derek Brown, Positive Damage Inc.: Yes, for sure. I started out really young. I left my house when I was 16 years old and I started working in bars and restaurants. So I effectively grew up in this environment where I learned how to work, how to live, and how to drink all at the same time. I was working with old, grizzled line cooks and lifelong waitresses at 16. They were wonderful human beings. They taught me how to be an adult and they also taught me how to drink, which maybe wasn’t the best influence. It was wonderful but also kind of terrible. So I learned this craft and started my career at a young age. One of my first jobs was at a Jewish deli called B.J. Pumpernickels in Olney, Maryland.
