Like many beautiful things, Soul Hum came from one of the most difficult chapters of my life.
In 2019, I lost my brother, Michael, and my sister-in-law, Hannah, to an accidental drug overdose. Somewhere in the devastating grief of losing them, my own drinking got worse. Eventually, it became clear that I needed to take a hard look at my own relationship with alcohol.
When I finally chose sobriety, I became almost obsessed with trying to understand what helps some of us find our way through addiction when others, like Michael and Hannah, never get that chance.
I still don’t have that answer.
But I did realize something that changed my life: I couldn’t just remove alcohol. I had to build a life that supported me without it—a life I actually wanted to be present for.
Soul Hum eventually became part of that life, and a way of holding myself accountable to it.
Along the way, I founded Hummingbird Heart Apothecary and Kombucha Bar, first in Long Beach, California, and now in Belmont, Oregon. It gave me a place to explore a longtime interest in plants, tinctures and botanical elixirs—but something even more important was happening across the bar.
Every day, we met people who were changing the way they lived. Some were sober. Others were sober-curious. Some were athletes focused on recovery. Others simply wanted to feel better without giving up the experience of sharing a beautiful drink with friends.
Over thousands of conversations, a common thread emerged: People weren’t just looking for something without alcohol. They were looking for something worth choosing.
That became the idea behind Soul Hum.
I wanted to create something for people who, like me, were building a different kind of life—not one defined by deprivation, but by intention.
The result was two botanical elixirs, Uplift and Unwind, created with ethically sourced botanicals and terpene oils and designed for different moments and moods. But what mattered to me was the entire experience of drinking them: aromatics that invite you into the present moment, sophisticated and layered flavors that awaken the senses, and even a beautiful bottle—because I believe the rituals we choose for ourselves should feel beautiful, too.
Through Soul Hum, we continue to honor Michael and Hannah while hopefully shining a little light for someone else who might be looking for more intention, more connection, or simply another choice.

Because this movement isn’t just about the things we’re giving up.
It’s about everything we get to create in their place.
